Step 1: A wireless router is better as it can allow you to connect both your desktop computer and your laptop. Most laptops are already wireless ready so all you need to do is set up the router and it will automatically pick up connection signal. For desktops, there are some that are wireless ready but others need to be installed with a wireless card first. Otherwise, you can always get a LAN cable and connect one end at the back of your computer and one end at one of the ports at the back of the router.

Step 2: Set up your router first. Get your Ethernet cable, the one that provides you with Internet services and plug it to one of the ports of at the back of the router. Next, get another Ethernet cable, usually included from the router package and connect it to your computer's modem.

Step 3: Plug the router and see if it picks up signals. If there are lights appearing and blinking, you can now install it on your main computer. If you have desktop, it is ideal to install it there and use it as your main base station. Just insert the disc in its CD-ROM.

Step 4: Follow the instructional guide. You will need to provide WAP details such as IP address, subnet mask and the like. You can find this information in the manual. Change the administrator password and the SSID name as these are usually hacked by invaders.

Step 5: Set up firewall and other security procedures. You can also find this in your manual.

Step 6: If you have laptops, check if they are already picking up wireless signal. You need to key in administrator password first so you can connect. Once you have entered the password, your laptop will already directly connect as long as your router is open.

Step 7: Make local area connection to allow your other computers to communicate. Just go to control panel and click network and sharing. You can see there how to make a local area connection.
